The City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) provides Portland residents with Clean River programs including water quality protection, wastewater collection and treatment, and sewer installation. Environmental Services has 450 employees. Five working groups operate under the Office of the Director - Planning, Industrial Waste, Engineering Services, Wastewater, and Business Services. Over 500,000 customers enjoy clean water and healthy rivers and streams through innovative wastewater and stormwater services, flood management projects, water quality and stream enhancement projects, fish habitat protection, and more. Our services are crucial to protecting the region's public health, environment, and economic vitality. Clean Water Services operates four wastewater treatment plants and 39 pump stations. The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board is a state agency led by a policy oversight board. Together, they promote and fund voluntary actions that strive to enhance Oregon's watersheds. The Board fosters the collaboration of citizens, agencies, and local interests. OWEB's programs support Oregon's efforts to restore salmon runs, improve water quality, and strengthen ecosystems that are critical to healthy watersheds and sustainable communities. OWEB administers a grant program funded from the Oregon Lottery as a result of a citizen initiative in 1998. The grant program supports voluntary efforts by Oregonians seeking to create and maintain healthy watersheds. To accomplish this OWEB... " funds projects that restore, maintain, and enhance the state's watersheds. " supports the capacity of local watershed-based citizen groups to carry out a variety of restoration projects. " promotes citizen understanding of watershed needs and restoration ideas. " provides technical skills to citizens working to restore urban and rural watersheds. The Portland District US Army Corps of Engineers is staffed by military and civilian engineers, scientists and other specialists who work hand in hand as leaders in engineering and environmental matters. US Fish and Wildlife Service Oregon Fish and Wildlife Office, has a mission of working cooperatively with others to protect, restore, and enhance natural habitats, supporting fish, wildlife, and plants for the continuing benefit of the American people. Their responsibilities include: protecting and recovering animals and plants that are in danger of extinction, assessing the effects of contaminants on fish and wildlife and responding to oil, chemical or pesticide spills, reaching out to partners and others with educational events and materials, addressing the impacts of development and other projects and activities on fish and wildlife through restoration activities, and providing expert biological advice to other agencies, non-government organizations and businesses.
